Droopy eyelids are a common and frustrating complaint, and one of the first cosmetic corrections people consider. The skin around your eyes is thinner than on any other part of the body. This skin can be easily stretched or damaged and appear to age more quickly than the rest of your face. Factors such as sun exposure, dryness, and the natural loss of skin elasticity further contribute to saggy, droopy eyelids, or bags under your eyes.

An eye lift, known as a blepharoplasty, can rejuvenate the skin and soft tissues around your eyes to give you a more refreshed appearance. Eyelift surgery can be performed on the upper or lower lids, or both, to remove or reposition drooping skin, eliminating bags, and tightening skin, making you look more youthful and rested.

An eyelid lift addresses the loose or sagging skin that creates folds and detracts from the natural contour of the upper eyelid. What to expect before an eyelid lift

During the eyelid lift (blepharoplasty) consultation, Cleveland facial plastic surgeon Dr. Diana Ponsky will examine and photograph your facial anatomy and discuss your concerns and goals. It may be recommended that you take certain medications or adjust your current medications in preparation for the procedure, such as avoiding aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs, and herbal supplements as these can increase bleeding and bruising.

What to expect during a blepharoplasty

Upper blepharoplasty can be performed under local anesthesia, whereas lower eyelid surgery is often more comfortable with intravenous sedation or general anesthesia. The incision for upper eyelid surgery is hidden within the natural crease. The incision for lower eyelid surgery is either hidden on the inner surface of the eyelid, or just below the eyelashes. The incisions typically heal very well and become nearly imperceptible once healed. Upper and lower eyelid surgery address excess skin and fat pads, which are oftentimes hereditary and become more apparent with aging.

What to expect after an eye lift

Initial healing may include some swelling, bruising, irritation, dry eyes, and discomfort. Lubricating drops or ointment and cold compresses are applied for comfort and to minimize swelling. Your surgeon and staff will review post-procedure care instructions with you along with any recommended medications. Sutures are removed 1 week after the procedure. After one week, the bruising and swelling is not typically noticeable to others. The appearance of your eyelids will continue to improve as swelling gradually resolves, resulting in a refreshed well-rested look.
