Sagging cheeks and deep smile lines are a common complaint in both men and women as we age. Over time, our once-plump cheeks flatten and the creases next to the nose and mouth deepen. A midface lift smoothes and lifts the area of the face from the corners of your eyes to the corners of your mouth, including the nose, cheeks, and the area above your upper lip.

Sometimes called a cheek lift, this new technique performed by Cleveland facial plastic surgeon Dr. Diana Ponsky offers incredibly natural results. The midportion of the face is lifted and secured higher in the face. Precision and delicate attention to the anatomy of the cheeks offers a natural, youthful appearance.

Nasolabial lines on either side of the mouth, commonly referred to as laugh lines, are lessened by a midface lift. The skin of the cheek area is smoothed and may be treated with subdermal fillers or fat grafting to recreate fullness. The end result is a more youthful, more refreshed appearance. A midface lift will not, however, address signs of aging in the forehead, jowls, and neck.

What to expect during mid-facelift surgery

Medications are administered for your comfort during the surgery. Depending on the individualized treatment, multiple things may take place during the procedure. A mid facelift generally begins with small incisions behind the hairline. The sagging cheek is lifted, creating a smoother and firmer surface. To improve contour, auxiliary procedures might be offered in tandem with a mid-face lift. Facial implants or fat transfer might be used, and fillers may help with wrinkle reduction. Lastly, resurfacing techniques may be used to improve skin tone and texture.

What to expect after a mid-facelift

Dressings will be placed over the incisions and pain medications are prescribed to help ease discomfort. While individual healing times vary, the swelling and bruising should be minimal, but strenuous exercise should be limited for a week. Makeup is usually enough to cover any signs of surgery until your face heals completely. Follow-up appointments are suggested for about a year to measure progress.
